ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

School Curriculum

At the Episcopal Cathedral School, instruction is in English for all grades, kindergarten through 12th, with Spanish given as a subject one period per day.

 

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students receive a solid foundation in arithmetic, English, and Spanish in a formal classroom atmosphere. They also participate in physical education, Christian education, and art/music.

 

Grades 1 and 2

Students continue to focus on the basics of English, reading, spelling, Spanish, arithmetic, and science. They also participate in physical education, art/music, and Christian education. Social studies is integrated into the other subjects.

 

Grades 3 to 5

Students in grades 3 to 5 continue to build a solid foundation in the basic subjects, including science and social studies. They also participate in physical education, art, music, Christian education, and technology education.

 

Grades 6, 7, and 8

Students focus on developing good character and sound habits, while also being encouraged to think independently. They continue to study the basics, including introduction to algebra, science (general science, introduction to life biology, and introduction to earth science), geography, history, Spanish, and English language arts/literature. They also participate in physical education, art, music, Christian education, and technology education.

High School

At the Episcopal Cathedral School, students in grades 9-12 have a rigorous academic program that prepares them for success in college and beyond. The following are the required courses for each grade level:

  • Puerto Rican History

  • Pre-Calculus or Calculus

 

Students must take at least six courses in their senior year. Electives offered include physics, computer programming, AP literature, and AP Spanish.

 

AP and Honor Courses

All courses at ECS are intensive and accelerated, providing students with the necessary preparation for national exams. A limited number of AP and Honor courses are offered, and participation in both is voluntary. Enrollment in AP courses is limited to those who qualify through placement tests and teacher recommendations. Honor courses are offered to junior students who take an intensive math course during the summer before their senior year. This year's honor courses are physics and calculus for seniors only.

 

Christian Education

As a Church-owned school, Christian Education/Morals and Ethics classes are a requirement for all students.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Episcopal Cathedral School Physical Education Program runs from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. It is designed to develop students' athletic skills, enhance their physical abilities, promote sportsmanship, and teach them basic sports history and rules.

 

Classes are generally taught on a weekly basis, with each individual group participating in a fifty-minute class (minimum, depending on the school level). At the lower grades, emphasis is placed on developing motor skills and movement coordination. Particular importance is given to developing physical ability, balance, coordination, flexibility, strength, and speed. Students participate in a variety of games, group activities, simple relays, and competitions that highlight their aptitude for throwing, jumping, running, bouncing, kicking, and catching. In addition to the basic development of skills, students are introduced to sports games such as volleyball, basketball, and kicking ball. Varsity basketball and volleyball teams are organized at the upper levels.

 

The Physical Education department, aside from its curriculum-related duties, is in charge of organizing a number of recreational activities and clubs related to the sports theme. Through these activities, coordinated by the Sports Club, students demonstrate their athletic abilities, enhance their competitive skills, and are provided with the opportunity to socialize in a structured environment outside the classroom.

 

Sports Club

The Sports Club is an organization in which the participating students are responsible for planning all sports activities during the school year. Overseen by the Physical Education teachers, this club coordinates events such as Sports Week, the School Field Days, Intramural Tournaments, and other recreational activities. Participation in this club is on a volunteer basis, and the organization is regarded as a vital part of the school community.

 

Sports Week

Sports Week is a week-long series of events beginning with the lighting of the "Olympic Torch," generally by a local or internationally well-known sports figure, and followed by recreational and sports activities on and off campus. These activities may include volleyball matches against other schools, visits by guest speakers, and field trips to sports-related venues. At Field Day, students are given a chance to compete against each other in a variety of track and field events, as well as swimming.

 

Parents and School Spirit

Parents are welcome to attend and participate along with their children in a competitive and pleasant environment. All sports and recreational activities at the school are extremely popular among the entire school community and contribute to the further enhancement of school spirit and the accomplishment of the school's vision and mission.

COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM

Transforming students into computer experts with our comprehensive computer technology curriculum for grades 5-12.

 

Our curriculum covers a wide range of topics, including:

  • Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Internet and web page design

  • Programming languages (Python, Java, etc.)

  • Computer networking and security

  • Digital citizenship and ethics

Our curriculum is designed to be engaging and interactive, with a focus on hands-on projects and real-world applications. Students will learn the latest computer skills and technologies needed to succeed in college and the workforce.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The After-School Program is a service for students from Kindergarten to 6th grade. It provides students with structure, supervision, academic assistance, and the opportunity to learn study skills. The program helps students maintain their academic standing, reduce family stress, and develop attitudes and skills that facilitate their success in school.
 

Benefits of the After-School Program:

  • Academic support: Students can receive help with their homework and prepare for upcoming tests and quizzes.

  • Study skills: Students learn how to manage their time, organize their materials, and develop effective study habits.

  • Social-emotional development: Students participate in activities that help them build relationships, cooperate with others, and resolve conflicts peacefully.

  • Creativity and exploration: Students have the opportunity to explore their interests and talents through a variety of activities, such as arts and crafts, sports, and games.
     

How to Enroll?

To enroll in the After-School Program, parents must complete an enrollment form and pay a registration fee. The program is open to all students, regardless of financial need.
